I thought about writing more, but I think it would be better to write separate articles on some of those problems. For instance, I was thinking about writing an article about how I thought I was trans when I realized I wasn't. I think there's more elaboration that can go in each of these topics, but I think this serves well as a beginner-friendly think about this piece

Someone else's problem
I think he's referring to dumping negative aspects of yourself into your tulpa and disassociating from them instead of dealing with them as part of maturing
ahh ok

To be honest, I wished that I have seen an article like this before, or had a guide with a precaution warning similar to this. If there was a guide that had it, I may have missed it, but I mostly got the warning of “a character that will live forever in your head”. (edited)

I do think people fail to mention
  • Not everyone sees eye-to-eye in tulpamancy
  • Some of the other problems with tulpamancy, especially the social and mental health problems that can come up
The concern a character will live forever in your head, I think is problematic. If you and your tulpa are doing just fine this won't be a concern in the first place, if it is a concern then it's plain false, it is possible to dissipate your tulpa (there's even a guide on it that's well made)

There's also value in not diluting the message with a potentially sensitive topic

Fair enough. However, I think length may scare away people more than anything

Those are honestly the people who badly need this the most- the people who won't bother to read and do research. My hope is people will take one look at this and go "ha lol" but remember this exists when they find themselves having issues down the road

Research? What’s that?

We were never huge fans of people who are most susceptible to some of these issues being recommended tulpamancy in general So I have little add in this regard But since that's far from the universal or necessarily correct perspective And since some people will do it anyway and there's enough success stories out there It's good that this article exists (edited)

Would the gender dysphoria / confusion be on the part of the tulpa or the tulpamancer or maybe both? I personally see it as being more of a tulpa issue with the body. If it’s with the tulpamancer having gender issues I don’t see how tulpamancy could really cause dysphoria as a result of the practice itself.

Sometimes a tulpamancer doesn't realize they have gender issues until they make a tulpa of a different gender

Can open up some things, even just from feeling the pov of their tulpa, their tulpa's feelings about gender
Avatar
Mmm fair enough, makes sense. Thanks for answering.

Either the host realizes something about themselves when they make a tulpa of the other gender or the tulpa’s gender identity becomes really strong and they get dysphoric because the body doesn’t match the gender they are meant to be

While I didn't feel dysphoric I was troubled by it a little. The idea of being trans was appealing to me, but I wasn't struggling the way Ranger was. At the time, we were not out of the closet, so this did create some issues for us. I have no idea how this works in general, we can only share our experiences. With us, Ranger struggled with dysphoria to the point it inflicted depression. For me, I liked the idea of cross dressing but I don't feel like I have to do it.

Regarding the guide, does this count as a median system?
You may prefer to embrace less separation as a system. Perhaps you all identify as part of a greater whole and believe experiences of one headmate apply to all. This can mitigate time pressure to do things individually and reduce problems with sharing significant others and responsibilities.

Is the process the same excepting you see the tulpa as a part of you instead of a fully independent thoughtform?

Honestly though, I'm not sure how many median systems remained median during the entire experience. Usually I hear people started with "tulpas are individuals" and then later conclude "tulpas are not independent individuals" (edited)

Right now, I don't have the ability to give this guide a formal GAT style review or anything like that. However, I did want to check it out. First of all... that was fast. It still astonishes me how our systems share a lot of similar ideas, and a lot of the concepts in this guide will probably pop up in my own. However, I have different opinions on this and what I talk about. Ultimately, will have a different delivery and a different focus. I like that this guide goes over a lot of examples on how to switch and that there are similarities between lots of different approaches. I also like how this guide focuses on the fact you can create what you get. I don't 100% agree with how switching works, but I think that's okay. I like that you emphasize that this is how you all think switching works. I'm confused about switching and possession. According to your guide, both involve controlling the body, or is that just possession? Can you possess and switch at the same time? Is possession soft-switching or are they different things? I don't think I have much else I can say on this guide. I don't think I can properly give feedback on stuff like structure and if I think a beginner would benefit from this because I think I would need to do a far more formal review. At the very least, it's a refreshing change of pace compared to other switching guides and I know people can learn a lot reading this guide.

Gelato Sweet | 💡 BOT 12/26/2022 4:28 AM
Possession is controlling the body, switching is changing the default personality. We'll give it a looksee to make it more clear. Probably add a part to the FAQ because a lot of the responses to our survey were about the differences between the terms

Now hold on just a minute, I’ve been around for a hot second (~8 years in tulpa spaces, 9 in general plurality ones)… and I don’t think “switching” ever meant changing what the body’s “default personality” was (and should we really be using 30+ year old terms like “personality”?) (edited)
5:48 PM
And all the glossaries you look up say things like
To switch is to change which alter(s) is / are primarily in control of the body.
SWITCHING The changing of body controllers.
Letting the tulpa take full control of the body while the previous controller steps out of control. Usually the previous controller then enters a tulpa-like state.
Avatar
Indigo Blue | 💡 BOT 12/26/2022 6:11 PM
It depends on how you factor "full-body possession" into it, I think. Since we're still using that term we've made a distinction. It's not common anymore but it's just how we've chosen to explain it for the purpose of the guide.
6:12 PM
lots of people don't use the term full-body possession anymore, so they use switching to mean any act of changing front, regardless of if you fully change states or not
6:12 PM
but the typical way of describing switching in the past was "original becomes like a tulpa and tulpa becomes like an original," we just substituted in the terms default/auxiliary personality
6:13 PM
think the whole "soft vs hard switching" thing, only it's basically just full-body possession vs switching
6:15 PM
for this guide anyway
6:16 PM
People are free to use whatever terms make the most sense for them, this is just the way we've defined it because that's how it makes the most sense to us

A long kiss goodnight 12/26/2022 6:54 PM
We have something similar actually- when we switch, the switched-in headmate is more or less the default identity/person of the body. I like to describe it as one of us attaching ourselves to the front/stream of consciousness (SOC)/point of view (POV)/etc. However, I see this as one possible type of switching (edited)
Avatar
Indigo Blue | 💡 BOT 12/26/2022 7:05 PM
I did change "default/auxiliary personality" to "default/auxiliary identity" though, partially to make it a little more clear that the "lazy personality" isn't a person
Avatar
Luminesce: "Changing the default personality" as a definition for switching isn't too bad because it's like an associated factor, but I don't think I'd describe switching in those words for teaching people because it doesn't explain what to do at all (edited)
8:06 PM
ie "Host and tulpa swap positions" would be more informational
8:06 PM
"Tulpa controls the body and mind" would also be meaningful

is there a post or something explaining how the approval process works currently?
Avatar
A long kiss goodnight 1/6/2023 4:16 PM
There is no approval process, the GAT is gone https://community.tulpa.info/topic/16757-community-feedback-survey/?do=findComment&comment=332985 I have been working on a new system on and off for the last couple years. The main thing holding me back is figuring out how to automate cleaning up the guide list so I don't lose listed guides in the process. After that, it's a matter of cleaning things up and publishing the system. Pretty much everyone hates the new system, but every proposal has been something completely different that would essentially lead me to starting over. My goal is to eventually finish this system, have it functioning, and then when enough people are angry and want to change it I'll help them organize the system they want
Avatar
Gelato Sweet | 💡 BOT 1/6/2023 4:25 PM
so should we expect it to remain in submission limbo for a while?
Avatar
A long kiss goodnight 1/6/2023 4:29 PM
Unless you want to help out by organizing the guide list. It's 300+ guides (I counted them) to sift through and also by category, with all of the hyperlinks in tact. It's a pain in the ass to put it bluntly, and not something I want any one person to do by themselves. The new system in a nutshell is everything automatically goes to guides (or Tips & Tricks or Articles or JDI) unless you choose to submit to drafts. A GAT-like disapproval system gets applied to any guides the community reports as problematic. If deemed a problem (so 70% disapproval), it gets moved to drafts until the author fixes it. (edited)

I mean I could help given adequate instruction, but we're not forum mods so idk how that would work
Avatar
A long kiss goodnight 1/6/2023 4:37 PM
Mostly I'm working with python code, but if we had multiple people reorganizing the guide list that honestly would be easier (and no code required of course). The objective is simple- everything in Submissions gets mixed in with the respective board. For now, I'm not moving anything that probably should go in a different place. JDI guides will be a little complicated because I don't plan on posting them in the list of guides, so a formerly Tips & Tricks guide losing its placement on the guide list is a bigger deal that I think warrants a review. As of now, there are no official JDI guides. Once I go upstairs I can get the guide list in a Google Doc and clean it up so people can edit it. If anyone else wants to help out, I would greatly appreciate it. I'll post a public access link here when I'm ready (edited)

Avatar
A long kiss goodnight 1/6/2023 4:44 PM
No. I'm adding a new section I'm calling JDI (Just Do It), but there's one guide that comes to mind I stumbled across in Tips & Tricks that may better fit JDI. However, since I don't want to post JDI guides on the guide list (they're not expected to be original after all), moving something from Tips & Tricks to JDI sounds like a big ask without review

Here's the link for viewing the guide list. I dumped the current version of the list into a Google Sheet to make it easier to work with. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17CZOjrqMj134O0H9gMnukPD4cNFN-DmodG-My9ALQes/edit?usp=sharing I also included an example of what I'm trying to do in the next tab. There, I fix the narration section as an example. I have three goals:
  • Combine everything in Submissions with the other guides
  • Separate Guides from Tips & Tricks
  • Preserve alphabetical order
The Articles section will be easier in the sense it just needs to be alphabetized. The Russian guide and the Other category I will fix, that can be ignored. You can help me edit the guide list here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PTXlbqHmKXukAjmIDcZqhbTdrGaSwjtLcytASNXI28A/edit?usp=sharing
